Do you know what a “slomad” is?

A “slomad” is someone who moves from place to place, spending weeks or months at a time in each location.

Basically, a slomad is a nomad in no rush to get to the next destination.

And in this episode of Get To Know Your Vet series, you’ll meet my friend and colleague, Dr. Ruth Roberts, and hear why she, her partner, and their dog Hio have chosen the slomad lifestyle.

This conversation with Dr. Ruth was a blast.

I think you’ll enjoy it, too, because Dr. Ruth and I talk about something I know is close to your heart: how to make better, more thoughtful decisions for our dogs without getting lost in confusion, guilt, or overwhelm.

Much like a slomad roaming the globe, Dr. Ruth Roberts and I covered a lot of ground in this conversation.

    We talked about:

    • Why Dr. Ruth Roberts says diet is the first and most important foundational piece of health, and why that matters whether you share your life with a dog, a cat, or both.
    • Why trying to switch cats from kibble to real food can be so difficult, and what that struggle reveals about the pet food industry.
    • A reminder for every loving dog guardian: if you are doing things well 90% of the time, the other 10% does not need to become a source of guilt.
    • What Dr. Ruth started noticing years ago that made her question conventional spay and neuter practices, and why she also became interested in hormone health.
    • The changes she saw in her own dog Hio after hormone replacement therapy, including better muscle tone, more energy, coat changes, and much less discomfort.
    • And yes, because this is Get To Know Your Vet, the conversation also wanders into friendship, hugs, travel, chocolate, cats, forgiveness, and more.

If you’ve tuned into the other episodes of Get To Know Your Vet, you know these aren’t lectures.

Rather, they’re heartfelt conversations between two colleagues and friends — and these talks get candid and real.

I love opportunities like this to connect with friends like Dr. Ruth Roberts and then share those conversations with you.

So, grab a healthy snack or drink (green tea is my go-to!) and join us for today’s episode.
