Heatwaves are putting animals at serious risk, but a few simple steps can protect them. Here’s what every farmer and pet owner should do right now.

Kochi, Kerala: As temperatures surge, the Animal Husbandry Department has issued an urgent advisory asking farmers and pet owners to take extra precautions. Heat stress is not just discomfort; it can quickly become life-threatening if ignored.

Common danger signs include high body temperature, panting, foaming, and sudden collapse, all of which require immediate attention.

The most important rule is hydration:

    • Clean water should always be provided for drinking.
    • Cows require at least 100 litres of water per day during peak summer.
    • Automatic drinkers are ideal to ensure a constant supply.
    • Troughs must be kept clean and refilled regularly.

Feeding and activity should be carefully timed:

    1. Provide feed only during cooler hours.
    2. Grazing animals should remain in shaded areas.
    3. Avoid transporting animals in open vehicles between 11 am and 3 pm.

With green fodder often scarce in summer, soaked paddy straw can help maintain nutrition, supplying essential micronutrients like zinc, copper, and selenium, which help reduce heat stress.

For pets, ensure constant access to fresh water, along with non-acidic ORS solutions to prevent dehydration. Cats should be given a mix of dry and wet food as part of summer care.

    Shelter & cooling

Proper housing plays a major role in protecting cattle from heat:

    • Sheds should be at least 10 feet high for better ventilation.
    • Keep three sides open to allow airflow.
    • Shade nets or plastic sheets used for temporary shelter should be raised and tied.
    • Roofs can be covered with straw or heat-resistant paint.
    • If agri equipment is stored above sheds, it should be removed to improve height and airflow.

    Cooling systems can significantly help:

    • Micro-sprinklers reduce body temperature.
    • Rooftop turbines improve ventilation.
    • Commercial farms can monitor humidity using dry bulb and wet bulb thermometers to manage heat stress effectively.

    Special focus: Poultry & pets

Smaller animals are more vulnerable to heat:

    • Bird cages should be covered with shade nets and moved to cooler areas.
    • Ensure continuous access to drinking water.

    For dogs and cats:

    • Move cages away from direct sunlight.
    • Maintain hydration and cooling throughout the day.
