Socialization is one of the most important things to teach your puppy. It helps your puppy to be  comfortable around people, other dogs, and everyday stimuli such as passing cars and loud noises. Because socialization plays such an important role in your puppy’s development, it’s important to know, “Where can I socialize my dog in Sarasota?”

Going out to stores is a great way to work on socialization training while escaping the Florida humidity. In this blog, we will share a list of dog friendly stores in Sarasota. The importance of socialization

Socialization is positive exposure to a wide variety of people, dogs, noises, and other stimuli from a young age. It helps your puppy to be comfortable around many different things, and in different settings. This can significantly reduce stress when going out in public and reduces the likelihood of problem behaviors developing, including reactivity and fearful behaviors.

Giving your puppy positive interactions with others will help them grow into a happy and confident dog who loves going out to meet new people, making friends at the dog park, and exploring Sarasota with you. Remember that socialization is not just having your puppy around different things, but making sure that your puppy has positive exposures to these things. Just remember to bring some puppy treats to reward calm behavior and help your puppy enjoy their outing.

When socializing your puppy, it’s very important that your puppy has positive experiences with a wide variety of people. This will help your puppy feel comfortable around people of different appearances and ages, which is not only helpful in everyday life but also when taking your dog to grooming and veterinary appointments. But what do we mean by “people of different appearances and ages”? Let’s give some more specific examples:

    • Children, including babies, toddlers, and teenagers
    • Adults of different ages (young adults, middle-aged adults, seniors)
    • People wearing hats, sunglasses, or uniforms (pet store employees, UPS workers, construction workers)
    • People of different races
    • People riding bikes, skateboards, or scooters
    • People with beards, glasses, or facial coverings such as masks
    • People carrying grocery bags, or different items
    • People with different clothing styles, including gym clothes and business attire

For more information on puppy socialization, you can check out our video on socializing a new puppy, which is presented by our co–founder and Certified Dog Behavior Consultant, Sean Savage.

How can you help your puppy have positive experiences with others?

You can help your puppy have positive experiences with stimuli that cause stress, by pairing it with things that your puppy enjoys, such as treats. After all, if your puppy hides from people and tries to run away, they aren’t going to develop good social skills.

If your puppy easily takes the treats when exposed to people, dogs, sounds and other environments, than they are experiencing a positive exposure to these things. This positive interaction can help give them the ability and confidence to manage new situations for the rest of their lives.

What if my puppy isn’t fully vaccinated?

It’s important that you take some extra precautions if your puppy is not fully vaccinated. Keep your puppy off grassy areas at parks or popular spots for dogs, and don’t let them play with unknown dogs. You should also wipe your puppy’s paws after their outings. We recommend organizing playdates with familiar dogs, and not going to dog parks.

When visiting a restaurant, you should bring a towel for them to lie down on. And if you are visiting any stores, we recommend keeping your puppy in a shopping cart.
