SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — PetSmart Charities has provided $2.8 million to the American Red Cross to help expand pet-friendly sheltering and support pet owners experiencing disasters.

According to a press release from the American Red Cross of Utah, the fresh funding will support shelter supplies geared toward families with pets, create pet comfort kits, provide assistance with pet-related expenses for those displaced, support pet preparedness education, and improve disaster training and technology updates to support and shelter pets.

Previously, in 2022, PetSmart Charities provided a three-year grant of $2.25 million to support the Red Cross. This new funding “builds on that commitment,” the Red Cross of Utah says.

“Families should not have to choose between getting to safety and protecting their pets,” Heidi Ruster, CEO of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region, is quoted as saying. “This grant will help the Red Cross expand sheltering options, supplies and preparedness resources so families with pets have the support they need if they must leave home quickly during a disaster.”

Preparing for an emergency with pets

With June being Pet Preparedness Month, the American Red Cross of Utah is encouraging families to include their pets in their emergency plans. PetSmart Charities says 90% of pet parents would not leave home in an emergency if their pets couldn’t come with them.

The Red Cross states that during emergency planning, pet owners should identify pet-friendly locations to stay, keep emergency supplies ready, and make sure animals have updated identification tags.

A pet emergency kit should be in a sturdy, easy-to-carry container that includes:

    • Copies of vaccinations and medical records

    • A familiar toy or blanket

    • Current photo of each pet

The free Red Cross Pet First Aid app can help owners assist their cat or dog when it falls sick or is injured and needs help before you can visit the veterinarian. The app guides owners through emergencies like choking, bleeding, seizures, and breathing problems.

Additionally, the app provides information on preparing emergency supplies for pets, when to call a veterinarian, and how to find pet-friendly care facilities or hotels. For more information about preparing for emergencies with pets, visit the Red Cross’ website.
