Rising temperatures can put pets at risk of dehydration. A pet expert shares simple tips to keep dogs and cats hydrated, cool, and healthy during the summer months.

Hydration, along with shade and rest, plays a vital role in protecting pets from the effects of extreme heat.

As temperatures soar during the Indian summer, staying hydrated becomes essential not only for humans but also for our pets. Dogs and cats are particularly vulnerable to heat-related stress and dehydration, especially when they are active or spending time outdoors. Pet parents must take a few mindful steps to ensure their furry companions stay cool, comfortable, and well-hydrated throughout the season.

Karan Gupta, Founder and Pet Expert, Goofy Tails, shares simple yet effective ways to keep your pets hydrated during the summer months:

Always Keep Fresh, Accessible Water Available

The most basic yet important step is ensuring that pets have access to clean, fresh water at all times. During summer, water can heat up quickly, so it should ideally be replaced multiple times a day. Keeping water bowls in different areas of the house can also encourage pets to drink more frequently.

    Incorporate Hydration Through Diet

Hydration doesn’t come only from drinking water; it can also come from food. Your pet’s daily meals can be a great way to help them stay hydrated, especially during the summer months. Including moisture-rich meals, broths, or wet food in their diet can significantly improve overall hydration levels. Adding these hydrating elements to their daily diet is a simple and effective way to support their health during hot weather.

    Add Pet-Safe Fruits and Vegetables

Certain fruits and vegetables with high water content can make excellent summer snacks for pets. Options like cucumber or small portions of watermelon (without seeds) can help supplement hydration while also providing essential vitamins. However, moderation and pet-safe choices are important.

Carry Water During Walks or Outdoor Activities

If you’re taking your dog out for walks or travel, always carry a portable water bottle and a small bowl. Summer walks should ideally be scheduled during the early morning or late evening hours, and hydration breaks should be frequent to avoid overheating.

Create Cool and Comfortable Resting Spaces

A cool resting spot can significantly reduce heat stress and the risk of dehydration. Ensure your pet has access to shaded areas, well-ventilated rooms, or cooling mats where they can relax comfortably during peak afternoon heat.

Offer Hydrating Treats or Frozen Snacks

Frozen pet-safe treats or chilled broths can be a great way to keep pets cool while increasing their fluid intake. These treats can be both nutritious and enjoyable, making hydration easier and more engaging for pets.

Watch for Early Signs of Dehydration

Pet parents should stay alert for warning signs such as excessive panting, lethargy, dry gums, or loss of appetite. Early intervention through hydration, rest, and cooling can help prevent serious heat-related health issues.

With a few thoughtful adjustments to daily routines, pet parents can help their furry companions stay healthy and comfortable even during peak summer months. Hydration, along with shade and rest, plays a vital role in protecting pets from the effects of extreme heat.
