As temperatures soar in Chennai during the summer months, pet owners are being urged to take extra precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of their furry companions, particularly dogs, who are highly vulnerable to heat-related stress.
Experts advise keeping pets indoors during peak afternoon hours when the sun is strongest, providing plenty of fresh water, and ensuring shaded areas for outdoor activity. Pavement surfaces can become extremely hot, which may burn dogs’ paws, so walks are recommended during early mornings or late evenings when temperatures are cooler.
Dr. Raghav Sharma, a veterinarian in Chennai, said, “Many pet owners underestimate how quickly dogs can suffer from heatstroke. Even short exposure to high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for short-nosed breeds like pugs or bulldogs.”
Owners are also encouraged to maintain proper grooming, avoid leaving pets in parked vehicles, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or vomiting. Nutrition and hydration play a key role, says Dr. Anitha Menon, a local animal care specialist: “Ensure your pets always have access to fresh water, and consider wetting their fur or providing cooling mats to help them regulate their body temperature.”
Timely care and vigilance during the summer can prevent serious health risks and ensure pets remain comfortable and safe.
