Some cats are not very picky about where their litter box is placed, while others may completely refuse to use a box that feels unsafe, inconvenient, or uncomfortable. Choosing the right location can help prevent litter box accidents and encourage your cat to use the box consistently.

Cats naturally prefer a clean, quiet, and easily accessible place to go to the bathroom. When deciding where to put the litter box, it helps to think about what would make your cat feel secure and comfortable — not just what is most convenient for people in the home.

7 Tips for Choosing the Best Litter Box Location

Choosing the right location for your cat’s litter box can help prevent litter box problems and encourage consistent use. Cats prefer a litter box that is clean, quiet, easy to access, and placed in an area where they feel safe and comfortable.

    1. Keep the litter box away from your cat’s food and water bowls. Cats generally do not like to eat near the area where they eliminate.
    2. Choose a location that offers some privacy without isolating the cat completely. A quiet corner or low-traffic area often works well.
    3. Make sure the area is well lit and easy to access. Dark, cluttered spaces may make some cats nervous or reluctant to use the box.
    4. Your cat should be able to reach the litter box at all times without relying on someone to open a door or move obstacles.
    5. Once your cat is comfortable with the litter box location, avoid moving it unless absolutely necessary. If you do need to relocate it, move it gradually over several days.
    6. Homes with multiple cats should have multiple litter boxes. It’s usually best to spread them out instead of placing them side by side.
    7. In multi-level homes, place at least one litter box on each floor so your cat does not have to travel too far to use it.  This is especially important for senior cats.

A properly placed litter box can make a huge difference in preventing accidents and helping your cat feel safe and comfortable in your home.

*Bonus tip:  Make sure you keep the litter box clean!  I had a cat once who absolutely refused to use the litter box if it wasn’t clean.  She’d pee and poop on the floor next to the box!
