Are you looking for a fun way to explore Tampa Bay with your furry companion? There are many dog-friendly parks in the Tampa Bay Riverwalk where your dog can meet new friends and have fun.
This 2.6-mile trail winds down the Hillsborough River, and ends at the Garrison Channel near the Florida Aquarium, with dog-friendly restaurants and coffee shops, public art displays, playgrounds, large open spaces, and historic sights. In this blog, we will discuss some of our favorite dog-friendly parks along the Tampa Bay Riverwalk, while explaining why the Riverwalk is a provides great opportunities for socialization training.
Socialization opportunities
It’s important that your dog is exposed to a wide variety of people, sounds, and other animals at a young age. The Riverwalk can expose your dog to a variety of people, including:
- Adults and children
- People riding bicycles, scooters, and skateboards
- People of different sizes and appearances
- Cars, trucks, boats, and other vehicles
Your dog will also be exposed to all the noises that come with being in a busy urban area. Your dog will be exposed to sounds including traffic, music, laughter, children screaming, and sudden movements. This exposure will help your puppy grow into a confident dog who can be relaxed in public, at appointments, and when guests visit your home. For information on socialization training, you can check out our blog on “why puppy socialization matters and where to start”. Because the Tampa Riverwalk is a large public area, you should take precautions if your puppy isn’t fully vaccinated.
What if my puppy isn’t fully vaccinated?
If your puppy isn’t fully vaccinated, we recommend that you take precautions when taking your puppy out in a public area. Your puppy should have minimal exposure to unknown dogs. If you would like your puppy to play with others, you can set up puppy play dates with familiar dogs.
When visiting public parks, we recommend keeping your puppy off the grass and on concrete surfaces. This will help prevent your puppy from chewing or picking up anything. You should also wipe their paws before going home.
Now that we have discovered socialization opportunities and precautions for unvaccinated puppies, let’s discuss the dog parks along the Tampa Bay Riverwalk.
There are many parks for you and your dog to explore
The Tampa Bay Riverwalk is packed with six parks to explore along the trail. We’d like to highlight three of these parks, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park, and the Water Works Park contain dog parks. Making these perfect places for your dog to burn off some energy alongside some dog friends.
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park features a dog park with turf and an agility course. The course has multiple round stepping platforms that dogs love to hop up onto. These platforms also make a nice photo opportunity for your dog. There’s even more to look forward to, as the City of Tampa has released plans to build two new dog parks for an even better experience.
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is an essential cultural stop, with the Glazer Children’s Museum, and the Tampa Museum of Art. It’s also a popular spot for families, featuring two splash pads, a playground, and a large grass area.
Julian B. Lane Riverfront Dog Park
Not to be outdone, the Julian B. Lane Riverfront Dog Park has two separate areas for both large and small dogs. These are fantastic parks with paw-print-shaped splash pads, which is a great opportunity for your dog to handle the Florida heat. Though you may want to bring a towel. The Julian B. Lane Riverfront Dog Park has shaded areas, plenty of seating, and some ramps for dogs to chase each other around (or over).
You should also take the opportunity to explore the rest of this park. Across its 25 acres, there are some beautiful artworks, a bat house, a splash pad (the giant tipping bucket is a crowd favorite), a playground, and a large lawn area that is used for Tampa’s many festivals and more.
Water Works Park – Queenie Dog Park
The Water Works Park is home to Queenie’s Dog Park. Your dog can run around the turf, bark chip, and rubber play surfaces, and when they need to cool down, there are shaded areas, including a canopied picnic area with a water fountain. Being located in Downtown Tampa, it’s a great opportunity for your dog to meet lots of new friends.
We recommend you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the Water Works Park. It has a splash pad that rivals the others with its giant bucket that tips over every two minutes. The Water Works Park also has a playground and an open grassy area with a scenic view of the Hillsborough River.
