Hyderabad: These days, a new trend is gaining popularity in Hyderabad — pet cafes. While cafes were traditionally spaces meant for human interaction, these pet-friendly establishments are creating unique experiences for animal lovers and their furry companions. At these cafes, people can bring their pets, celebrate their birthdays, enjoy special treats, and allow them to socialise with other animals in a safe and welcoming environment.
The main purpose of these cafes is to make pets feel special and provide them with opportunities to interact with other animals. They are often located in affluent urban neighbourhoods that offer sufficient space for pets to roam freely, higher disposable incomes for specialty menus, and communities where residents may face restrictions on keeping pets at home but still seek animal companionship.
Cafes such as Dog.alicious have carved a niche for themselves by offering healthy and delicious cakes specially prepared for dogs. Roastery Coffee House is another popular pet-friendly café that welcomes pets and provides treats for them. The Pet Café Hyderabad describes itself as a “café with a cause” and was started eight years ago with the intention of building a community around rescued animals.
The founders wanted people to give abandoned animals a second chance at life through adoption. So far, the café has facilitated 786 adoptions and attracts visitors ranging from three-month-old babies to 80-year-old senior citizens. According to the management, one of the major operational challenges is educating visitors on how to interact with animals properly. Some people are unfamiliar with handling pets and often ignore instructions regarding boundaries and animal behaviour.
To ensure safety and comfort, the café maintains high standards of hygiene. All animals are vaccinated, separate dining and play areas are provided, and staff members thoroughly sanitise their hands after handling pets. Besides regular visits, the café hosts pet birthday celebrations, adoption anniversaries, proposals and even LGBTQ dates.
Another pioneer in the segment, Café De Loco, was established in 2017 with the aim of creating a dedicated space where pets could play, relax and have fun. Initially, convincing people about the concept of a pet café was challenging because the idea was entirely new. However, the café found success within six months of its launch and went on to become one of the first establishments in the city to offer celebration cakes and treats for pets.
Today, these cafes attract a diverse clientele, including pet owners, families, students and young professionals. Their growing popularity reflects changing attitudes toward pets, who are increasingly viewed as family members deserving love, care and celebration. Through these cafes, Hyderabad is embracing a culture where pets are cherished and included in special moments, just like humans.
